I first visited Cambodia in 2002. When I went across the border, I went from an oil road in Thailand to a road of rock and clay that went from the border to Seim Reap. Cambodia was a step back in time from Thailand; the people were poorer, and many services just did not exist there. There was a bus station, but no busses. At the bus station, one would negotiate with one of the many trucks or cars there that would take you along with them to Seim Reap. At that time, great care needed to be taken to make sure that the person you got in with really took you to Seim Reap as robbery was comon. At that time, there were even instances of army troops who had not been paid stopping civilian traffic and robbing them or taking a tribute to let them by.
